My name is Nicola and I draw, design and make under the name ‘The Catkin Boutique’. I live in the Herefordshire countryside and am surrounded by nature where I get a lot of my inspiration.
I love drawing, especially animals, either expressing different characters through illustration or simply focusing on the patterns of their fur, scales or feathers. I transform my drawings into a range of items including jewellery, textiles and art prints.
I print my drawings onto plastic and cut, varnish and glaze them to make into earrings, pendants and brooches.
I also turn my drawings into silkscreen and lino prints. I work from a converted garage in the garden: silkscreen printing at home can be a bit hit or miss, but I love the results when it works!
I hand print my designs on to fabric for tote bags, scarves and cushions or paper to make greeting cards and art prints.
Cats as inspiration:
I’ve always had cats in my life: they are such happy creatures! I like to depict their expressions as well as the lovely contours of their bodies – which translate well to two-dimensional prints.
They have an endless range of personalities and can visually look very different from each other, so they are a subject I always go back to without ever getting bored.
